Wildwood approved a major development near CR 466 and CR 209. Traffic, water, and road costs are raising questions.
Wildwood commissioners approved land-use and zoning changes for Canan Lakes, a 145-acre housing development near Oxford, on October 26.
Recent reporting says the project could include up to 580 homes, although earlier city records listed 553.
The project could bring:
Planning estimates suggest nearly 5,000 vehicle trips each day.
A need to widen County Road 209.
Planning estimates suggest about 181 to 190 additional students.
More demand for water and sewer service.
City planning records say school and utility capacity is available. They also show that some nearby roads were already carrying heavy traffic.
But important questions remain.
Who pays to widen CR 209? How much water will the homes need? And what improvements must be made before construction?
OurSumter is reviewing the public records to find those answers.
Growth affects more than the people buying new homes. It affects the roads, schools, and services we all use.
Residents deserve to know the cost of growth before the bills come due.

Update — October 29, 2026
Earlier planning documents describe 553 homes, while later reporting describes up to 580. The final legally approved number and binding road funding obligations remain unverified. Nearly 5,000 daily vehicle trips is an estimate, not 5,000 different cars.
