Lake County commissioners voted 4–0 today to approve filing a complaint against the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Hubbard Construction, the operator of Mid-Florida Materials near Mount Dora.
Residents described strong odors that affect time outdoors and reach inside their homes. Officials discussed access to the landfill property, water testing, and monitoring wells. Staff confirmed they are requesting PFAS testing.
The board also approved a bond as may be required by the court for injunctive relief. This was authorization to pursue the case, not a court finding of contamination.
Why does this matter to Sumter County?
Sumter residents have their own concerns about Heart of Florida Landfill and its proposed deep injection well. These are different facilities and different cases, but Lake County’s action deserves a close look.
Sumter already has a landfill lawsuit underway. Our commissioners should ask the County Attorney whether Lake County’s approach offers additional options here—and give residents a clear answer, an action plan, and a date for the next update.
Our water and quality of life deserve that follow-through.
