The June 9, 2026 Sumter County Board of County Commissioners agenda includes several documents related to the Heart of Florida Landfill and the proposed deep injection well project.
Among the materials is correspondence from Heart of Florida Landfill leadership announcing a newly updated public information website intended to provide residents and elected officials with information regarding landfill operations, environmental monitoring, and the proposed injection well concept.
According to the correspondence, the website contains information about landfill liner systems, groundwater monitoring, routine testing programs, and the engineering and regulatory requirements associated with Class I injection wells.
The website also emphasizes that any future injection activities would be subject to state and federal oversight and would occur far below drinking water sources.
At the same time, community concerns remain active. The June 9 agenda packet also includes correspondence from Tracy’s Point Community Club requesting additional oversight and investigation related to ongoing odor and health complaints reported by area residents.
After reviewing the website and BOCC materials, I submitted a request for additional information regarding:
• Leachate treatment methods prior to disposal
• Monitoring of PFAS and other contaminants
• Availability of groundwater monitoring data
• Publication of exploratory well findings
• Long-term environmental safeguards and contingency planning
As this issue continues to develop, access to technical information and public records will be important for residents seeking to better understand both the potential benefits and concerns associated with the proposed project.
I will continue reviewing public records, agency responses, and meeting materials and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
