As another Bushnell City Council meeting approaches, residents continue to seek answers regarding the Heart of Florida Landfill, the proposed injection well, and plans to bring additional waste into Sumter County by rail.

Many questions remain unanswered.

Citizens have repeatedly expressed concerns regarding odors, groundwater protection, traffic, and overall quality of life. While local officials have noted that many regulatory decisions fall under state and federal authority, residents still expect local leaders to advocate on behalf of their communities.

This issue is no longer simply about waste disposal.

It is about transparency, public trust, and ensuring that residents have a voice in decisions that may affect their community for decades.

Whether residents support or oppose landfill expansion, everyone should agree on one principle:

The public deserves clear information, meaningful engagement, and honest answers.

The June 1 meeting provides another opportunity for those conversations to occur in public.
