Wildwood commissioners covered police staffing, downtown water improvements, food truck rules and code enforcement during their October 19 workshop. Here are the main updates from the discussion.
Police department changes
The police chief outlined a plan to reorganize existing staff, improve communication with residents and provide coverage across the city, including Oxford and The Villages. The proposal includes officers assigned to entertainment districts and restoring an assistant chief position. The chief said he was not requesting additional positions. The discussion did not establish whether the changes would increase salary costs.
Gamble Street water improvements
Staff presented plans to replace the Gamble Street water main and service lines, move water meters and backflow devices away from buildings, and add landscaped areas. Staff said they had met with nearby businesses to work around deliveries and access needs. Access would be maintained as construction proceeds. A project price and construction schedule were not established during the discussion.
Food truck rules remain under review
The city is considering rules for food trucks after staff reported concerns about utility connections, waste disposal, parking and traffic visibility. City Manager Jason McHugh said the draft would restrict food trucks within the Community Redevelopment Agency district. A ten-year grandfathering provision for existing operations was discussed, but its details need confirmation in the written proposal. Commissioners sought more input from businesses and the community before moving ahead. No food truck ordinance was adopted during the workshop.
Code enforcement and problem properties
City attorneys explained the work and costs involved in pursuing code enforcement foreclosures. Commissioners had a list of seven potential cases, but attorneys said the full list had not been fully reviewed. Officials discussed title problems, unpaid taxes and legal costs, and emphasized that the goal is getting properties into compliance. The workshop did not establish authorization to foreclose on all seven properties.
